This mattress buying guide can help you find what you’re looking for - even if you’re not sure what that is yet.
Here’s a closer look to allow you discover your optimum size and fit.
What mattress should I buy?
The answer to this depends on a number of different factors - so we’ve taken a look at some of the key ones. Here’s the mattress guide you need. This is a very personal choice, as it determines the comfort and support you’ll receive from your mattress. We offer a firmness rating as a guide to helping you pick the right option for you.
Type of mattress
We offer a wide range of memory foam mattresses, as well as pocket sprung with memory foam and reflex foam. Each have their distinct differences and benefits, therefore it’s vital you weigh these up when choosing a mattress.
Memory foamMemory foam mattresses will mould to your shape, meaning your body will be cradled by the foam and supported by the base.
Pocket sprung
With a pocket sprung mattress, every spring supports each area of your body individually. This is ideal if there’s a significant weight difference between partners sharing a bed. These beds and mattresses have more spring to them than full foam.
Reflex foam
A reflex foam mattress will feel quite firm. Although still offering comfort and support, it won't create the same high level of comfort and pressure relief that memory foam can. Therefore, they’re not recommended for those with specific pressure points or pains.
However, reflex foam mattresses are ideal for those on a budget, or for use in guest bedrooms.
Mattress depth
A deeper mattress, such as 30cm, will offer a higher level of support, particularly important for those of a heavier build or with musculoskeletal problems.
On the other hand, in most cases, young children and light-to-average sized adults are usually happy with a shallower depth mattress. This could be between 15cm – 20cm deep, for example. This is entirely dependent on personal choice.
Memory foam layer depth
The depth of the memory foam layer has an impact on the overall feel of the mattress. It also dictates the support and pressure relief that it offers.
Choosing the correct thickness for you will be dependent on your sleeping position, your mattress condition and your weight.
In general, the shallower the depth of the memory foam layer, the firmer the mattress will feel. A deep memory foam layer will provide the ultimate soft and luxurious feel. This allows the body to sink deeper into the mattress without feeling the support base below.
Again, this is down to personal choice. However, if you suffer with back pain or any musculoskeletal problems, (such as arthritis), we recommend you look for a memory foam layer of 7cm or above. This will offer the best level of support and comfort.
Sleeping position
Mattresses are a very personal item, which means you need to consider your individual situation.
Are you a side sleeper? A combination sleeper? These questions matter, as back sleepers tend to prefer firmer mattresses, while mattresses that mould the the shape of your body are better suited to side sleepers.
Also - do you tend to overheat at night, or are you a cold sleeper? This should help determine what you buy, as the model will determine your airflow and therefore your temperature.
Considering your unique sleeping qualities is just as important as the specific mattress itself.
Brand
Taking a closer look at the brand can help you filter and narrow down your selections.
There are a number of material types that make up the bulk of what’s on the market, from foam to latex. These include:
- Hybrid mattresses
- Latex mattresses
- Innerspring mattresses
- Foam mattresses
- Airbeds
If you’re unsure what these all mean, you could use the brand to help you determine your choice.
Mattress size
Most mattresses will come in a range of sizes, from twin to California king. However, this isn’t the case for all of them. You need to know what size you require before you purchase.
Density
The denser the mattress, the higher content of memory foam which has been used.
This provides an overall firmer mattress which is ideal for sleepers who want a higher level of support for their neck and back.
A high density mattress ensures your spine is correctly aligned as you sleep, reducing the need to toss and turn by up to 80%.

Tempur vs. Memory Foam Warehouse - Which mattress is best for me?
With so many up-and-coming brands dominating the mattress market, it can be hard to differentiate which factors constitute quality.
When it comes to memory foam mattresses, Tempur are held in high esteem by many and have earned their reputation as a leading brand in the field. As they’re a trusted brand who produce consistently high quality mattresses, their products are often accompanied by an expensive price tag.
Price doesn’t always equal quality
A quality memory foam mattress will do all that it promises. It will offer support and extraordinary comfort. For people suffering with back pain, arthritis, and other joint problems, the relief a memory foam mattress offers is priceless.
We would never advise going ‘cheap’ on a mattress. We consider all our mattresses as investment products which lead to a better quality of sleep.
However, as sleep experts, we do spend plenty of time talking to our customers about what they need. What we have discovered is that memory foam is often associated with high expense, in comparison to other types of mattress.
In many cases, this is true. However, if you look beyond the bigger brands, you can still benefit from a quality memory foam mattress without the enormous price tag.
Why choose memory foam?
Memory foam has a number of health benefits, providing a support system for multiple areas of your body.
It can also:
- Ease muscle pain
- Circulate air
- Relieve stiffness
- Provide lumbar support
- Contour your body
- Absorb shocks
- Remove strain
The benefits of a rolled mattress
All our memory foam mattresses are delivered rolled (unless specified otherwise).
A rolled mattress still delivers superior comfort and support night after night, while having the added benefits of:
- Being easy to transport
- Ensuring a quick and easy delivery service
- Improving the performance - making it less resilient and slightly softer
We would not however, recommend keeping your mattress rolled for longer than a two month period, as we cannot guarantee the integrity of a product which has been rolled for longer than this. Please also be reminded that we urge you to check over your product as soon as you receive it. This gives you have the opportunity to contact us should there be any discrepancies.
If you order a memory foam mattress with us and would prefer that it is not rolled for delivery, simply ask our sleep experts to note your preference when ordering. We are more than happy to accommodate your request and deliver your mattress flat.
How much should I spend on a mattress?
The price of a mattress can range from couple of hundred pounds to a few thousand; but a high price doesn’t mean a higher quality product.
It’s essential you have decided on a price limit before you visit a mattress supplier. Many mattress salesmen are commission-based, and it can be easy to be convinced or pressured into paying more money than you bargained for.
Having a budget will prevent you from making any irrational purchases which can hurt your bank balance. Informing the sales team of your price range will help them to show you the appropriate items or deals. It should also prevent them from trying to sell you something which you can’t afford.
Although it is important to budget, you should also remember that a mattress is an investment.
The quality of a mattress can even impact your health and lifestyle. Poor quality can cause unnecessary aches and pains and affect your sleep negatively.
Your health and comfort should always be made a priority, which is why we always recommend that you spend as much as you can allocate. You should consider the quality of the materials, as well as the design and finish so ensure that you choose a reputable company for your purchase.
How do you clean memory foam?
If you happen to spill a liquid on your mattress, we would recommend that you strip and wash the cover before gently cleaning the foam. It’s important to only use a small amount of lukewarm soapy water.
If you just want to give your mattress a general clean, a vacuum cleaner is a quick and easy method of removing unwanted dust and crumbs from its surface. You can then wipe it down lightly with a mild detergent, before allowing it to air dry.
For optimum protection: use a mattress cover.
